Innate? or learned? I never bought the Sunday school story as a child, in spite of my mother being very active in the church, and a biblical scholar. As a teenager, I started reading about other religions and philosophy. I was always good at science, and it has given me the perpective to understand the wonders of the world without needing a deity to take credit. Call me a 'born again skeptic'. Started out that way, was 'confirmed' at the age of reason.
Do you think this can be innate? Learned? or a combo of both?

When you are vary young you believe every thing your parents teach you. The more hard working and honest those parents are the harder it is to second guess them. Some people will never bother to learn for themselves. It's to easy to just go on believing. So it's learned but some people will never learn.

If religious belief was innate, people wouldn't start out with their parents' religions. The propensity towards belief may be innate though.

All things are learned.

Sounds like my life, except my mom isn’t as bad as that. With out indoctrination, I think it is innate. May have to be learned by some, though. Idk

You can have an innate understanding that what they teach you is nonsense. What you learn can trigger a deeper, and more deliberate, understanding of reality. Using your head.

I have had the feeling that there are two types of people, those for whom a god is natural, and those who are skeptics. Think I was born a skeptic, and wanted to question everything. At a fairly young age didn't believe in tooth fairy, easter bunny, santa, and god. Now, my sisters just seemed to accept god. (this is a non-scientific answer). Think it is innate, but can be learned.

We have an innate tendency to seek and find patterns in random things. In addition we apparently have a 'god spot' in our brains. So, I think we are predisposed to be susceptible to religious indoctrination.

@CrazyQuilter The innate qualities seem to be ubiquitous for humans according to many recent studies. Being predisposed to susceptibility doesn't mean we all fall for it. We can often overcome instinct with thought.

@CrazyQuilter Exactly. Well said

The innate tendency is to "anthropomorphise " mysteries. Learned is to apply logic, based on already discovered facts. Reasoned is to take known logic and a sense of the innate in order to leap forward to new fact.
