Are You Dealing with a Vanity Press or Publisher — of either Books or Magazines?

Writers easily recognize and avoid one; it’s “pay and we publish”. Readers don’t easily recognize one.

I rejected a traditional publisher's offer over some of the legal liability language and printed my non-fiction book with a Print-On-Demand company since it had a niche audience. Sold a couple thousand.

I was once offered thousands of dollars to ghost-write and produce 10 copies of an imitation-leather bound edition of a family history -- which she would gift to her family members. She then vacillated, either didn't know what she wanted, or was fantasizing from the start.

Science magazines concern me most.

A published hypothesis may be science or pseudoscience. When it can be falsified it’s science; when it cannot be falsified it’s pseudoscience. But testing may cost too much.

Peer review? How do readers know when peers are open to new findings or when they are pseudoscientists?

A magazine’s opening words may be clues. Is “hypothetical” among them? “if they exist”? “have yet to identify”?
