Hello and thank you for having me as a new member of this group. I have been writing as a hobby for many years and I find it is something that runs in fits and starts. A pressure to write starts to build up inside of me until I just have to sit down and write it all out, mostly short stories although I have found myself bouncing around ideas in the back of my mind for a novel or two lately. Does anybody else get like that? Months or years of little to nothing to write and then suddenly a need to purge a bunch of stuff?

I've been writing my autobiography in fits and starts for some 20 years! At this rate, by the time I finish it I'll be breaking world records for longevity!
I also love writing poetry, but that too happens in fits and starts.
I started writing a pantomime in rhyming couplets last September. I was half way through by November. Then I took a rather long Yuletide break. I finally reached the point of only needing to write the final two scenes around the end of February - and haven't touched it since then.
In my magazine publishing days, (I owned 3 titles) I never wrote much until the print deadline was for a couple of days time, then suddenly became motivated and would write for 24 hours non-stop.
I think is is a "discipline" thing, and I need to be tied over a barrel and disciplined with a whip.

Some of us just like the thrill of being under pressure and need it to perform at our peak, that's what I keep telling myself anyway. 
So true...Parched from the desert of nothing... to a plethora of thoughts...YUP been there done that!

Oh yes, definitely. I'll get really excited about a new project, but just think about it for a long time before I start writing. I'm going through that now, as a matter of fact, with a children's book I want to write. I get very lazy about my writing, but when I'm into it, I get energized. My problem is motivating myself to get into it. I'm bipolar, so sometimes I get manic about it, which can be good or bad. Just remember that everyone's process is different; there is no right or wrong way to go about writing. Yes, there can be some helpful steps, but I think we all go about the craft differently.
