Reading a Jarod Diamond book, always enjoy his work. Just so many fascinating things about other cultures. Came across a little gem that highlights the importance of researching local customs before visiting, especially in less well travelled parts. If you are driving in rural New Guinea and you hit a pedestrian, even if it was 100% unavoidable, don't stop to render aid! Drive directly to the nearest police station and turn yourself in. Because if you stop, good chance bystanders will simply kill you, and possibly your passengers as well. Yikes.

I had to stop. His knowledge of anthropology and the history of primitive cultures may be good, but his knowledge of contemporary and 20th century history was facile and pretty much adhered to Neocon propaganda. Disappointing.

I may not be able to keep reading. He's made several broad generalizations that I know to be factually suspect regarding modern civilization.

Wow! Safer to ride a bicycle.

The same applies in Haiti, just in case you find yourself travelling closer to home.

Posted by qpr81Trajan's column in Rome. Shame they put a pope on top of it. Even though this is a monument raised over a genocide it's still something worth seeing.
