My youngest wants to spend a year working in Canada after he finishes his electrical apprenticeship. He is desperate to see snow. He wants to have a go at all the snow/ ice sports. He wants to get a job in a bar and meet locals. He's blond, tanned, muscular, funny and looks like a Hemsworth (naturally I am a biased mum). I suppose many Aussies do this. Any advice? Toronto or Ottawa? Where would be a good spot for young fellow? He has promised me that if he meets a nice girl she will have to relocate because no way does he want to spend his entire life in a freezer. I''m relieved it is Canada he is keen to see and not USA. Too many people get shot there.
Thanks for the tips. I'll pass them on. I told him I'd be coming to visit him when he does get there. Although I'll be wanting to visit Prince Edward Island because even miles and miles away there was no escaping a certain girls book.
If he wants a big city I agree with Vancouver, I live in a ski town 800 miles North of Vancouver. I heartily dislike big cities. If he insists on Ontario yes I'd agree Ottawa not Toronto.
Vancouver BC.....Pacific Ocean, mountains with snow, Whistler Village nearby with skiing, rivers, lakes, forests, fishing, hiking, skating, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hockey, swimming, diving, boating, Fraser River with Hell's Gate white water rafting..........
I think he'd like the sound of this.
@MsDemeanour This is a great province, & we have lots of Australians here. Our scenery, activities, etc., is top notch.
Vancouver is the closest major Canadian city to Australia and very much like going to New Zealand so that might be an easy transition. Plenty of snow on the mountains and very good wet suit surfing off of Vancouver Island. As a hopping off point this could work very well for your son, from there he can venture east across the Prairies to the Canadian Heartland, Toronto and eventually Montreal.
if he wants snow that varies a lot across the country. Mountains are the best bet. Toronto gets a lot of rain during the winter as does the east coast.
For young people there is a "Working Holiday Program" and info is available at [cic.gc.ca]
