I'm coming to the end of the first week on my current diet and I'm struggling. I'm pretty sure that when I weigh myself on Monday I will have lost some weight, but I really don't feel motivated to keep going, even though I know it would save me considerable physical pain if I lost a lot of weight. Food is just about my only pleasure at the moment.

Hang on, it will get better. The first few weeks can be hard, your body isn't used to the reduced intake so you likely feel hungrier plus, you miss the pleasant feelings that come with eating, more so in the beginning. As you lose some there will be some pleasure to draw from your accomplishment. Losing more and starting to lose some of the pain it is causing you will give you good feelings to help replace the food pleasure. The longer you can hang on, the longer you will be able to hang on. Duh! That sounds rather redundant but it is true, if you can stick with it a couple weeks, the prospect of another couple weeks will seem like something you can do easily.

It will seem like less of a struggle as you move forward. This is important because you have to remember that just because you take off the weight you want to, you won't be able to just lapse back to eating like you have in the past. That is one of the realities that I have really accepted this time, unlike many past weight lose journeys I have gone on but when I got where I wanted to be, I just kind of kicked back and returned to ignoring what and how much I ate. Of course, I ended up gaining it all back. That is why I believe "slow and steady" is the best course. I have followed it this time instead of being in a rush to get pounds gone and even when I've backed off the diet, I have found it maintenance to be quite manageable.

Remember, you CAN do this and you deserve to feel better and to have pleasure in your life. Take that wherever you can. Enjoy it when you notice you have less pain, when the scales give you a good reading, when you start to notice your clothes fitting better or maybe getting too loose. Smile at yourself when you grab a handful of little carrots or an apple instead of a cookie or chocolate and laugh when you find it just as pleasurable. Be persistent, you will succeed. Two years ago, I didn't think I would ever lose weight again and was resigned to that but when I had a medical scare I KNEW I had to do it. I also resolved that I WOULD do it. It has paid off. It will for you as well.

Thank you. I can't do likes on my phone at the moment but I appreciate your taking the time to reply. I am determined to keep going, even if progress is slow. It's time I treated myself better! I will report progress or otherwise. I have got my weight right down several times in the past and then put it back on so I am not going to think too far ahead - just do it, for the moment. I have sacks of small clothes waiting for me!

@CeliaVL Good for you! Take your time at it, I believe that it is easier to handle maintaining if you lose gradually instead of rushing it. It is kind of "practice" for maintenance.

I actually ended up with no smaller clothing, I had given up the idea of dieting, figuring I was retired, "contented" (?) and not looking to attract attention so I ditched all the smaller things I had saved from previous lose episodes. I have found it rather enjoyable to shop for new things, although I buy almost all of it at Goodwill or other thrift shops. I actually get a little buzz out of finding something nice, unusual and well fitting in a thrift store.
Keep me posted, I'm rooting for you. 🙂

@DotLewis Thank you. I am looking forward to getting into my smaller clothes because they are so much nicer than my big baggy ones. It is as though I only allow myself nice things as a reward for being thinner and have to be punished for being fat.

@CeliaVL Big fan of baggy clothes here. I've got some jeans lately that fit pretty well. My neighbor, who i help out a fair bit, gave me some money for my birthday and said "get yourself smaller outfit". Still looking for it. Likely to still be something like jeans and a t-shirt.

@DotLewis I agree in principle. I'm not into fashion - I favour what in the UK is considered country clothes. But I like good quality even though I buy most of it in charity shops. When I am at my fattest I tend not to buy anything 'good', on the grounds that I am not going to stay like this!

Sometimes there's a subconscious reason we hold on to our weight. Often it's a need for safety. If there are unresolved issues from your past, such as traumatic experiences where you didn't feel safe, the effects from that might still be lingering. So it can be a feeling of not being safe in your current environment or an unresolved feeling of not being safe in the past that can leave you feeling unmotivated to lose weight.

Thanks for your thought. I can see that might be a reason for some people but I don't think it is in in my case. I am hanging on - I did better today. I am hoping that as I lose weight I will feel the benefit and that will encourage me to keep going.I need to think of some non-food rewards.

@CeliaVL Good luck. I hope you can get past this part of it.

@Meili Thanks!
