22 May 2019 - Diet Diary - SUN, SUN, SUN! Yes, the sun did break through today and it was a lovely sunny day. Still chilly out but the sun made up for a lot of it. Ran errands, took neighbor to med appointment & library and sold 6 pair of size 16 jeans which I had no intention of ever wearing again. 🙂 Still have 4 pair of size 14 I hope someone shows interest in. If not, off to Goodwill or more likely the local thrift store. Board meeting for Sr. Center tonight, now I have to write up the minutes. Then big stuff I have to do is done.

Seeing a little movement in weight so might be easing off the plateau. Hope so. Really low today, intake right now is at 899. It may go up a little as I might have a handful of peanuts before I hit bed. Will have to hurry though, it is already 12:30 and I have to make the bed yet. Guess I should get off the computer and get ready.

I've been intrigued by people who join BO but do not post in the forum. Since I try to welcome everyone, I've said a few words to many of you. Admin gave me this forum because the original host left, and I was one of the few who ever posted anything. DotLewis is about the only other person who does, and she taught me a lot. The responsibility of this forum limits things I can say to members. For example, if I was involved with someone and it went bad, that person might leave our community because of me, and that would not be good. In addition, I have power to block a person from the forum, which thankfully has not been required. One woman joined, who was concerned about men joining to take advantage of lonely fat women. Before her, I'd not been aware of that problem. So far, no one has complained, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I would block someone like that, if there were more than one complaint. With a single complaint it would be a difficult decision for me to make. I would consult with Dot.

I've tried to get a few people who join to message me, and hopefully to post on BO. So far I've failed. I expect many of the women here are messaging one another, and being a man, I'm not included.

If there is anything I can do to help anyone, please message me.

I wonder about that sometimes, too. I don't know if (almost) everyone has the situation under control and doesn't need to post or if more of them are out of control and don't want to admit/discuss it or if there just isn't that much interest in the topic for most. Maybe a combo of all that.

It would be good to see more members posting, whether questions, thoughts, personal experiences with weight/diets or interesting stories/articles/studies on anything related to weight management or even just fun, diet related stuff. More activity would in turn promote more activity, which would benefit this group and hopefully many of it's members.

I don't know about other members messaging each other, I don't hear from any although there are a couple I would message with it the conversation called for more privacy. It seems counterproductive to take too much discussion to messaging, if someone is unwilling to share anything on the open forum, what purpose is served by being a member? Sharing on the board can not only provide a personal outlet for one's own struggles but also give encouragement, support and ideas to other members who are still reluctant to share.

Saturday was a sunny day, and in the wee hours of Sunday morning, which the forecast says will be sunny again, I watched a TEDx by Olivia Remes, titled How to git rid of loneliness and become happy. Her advice was simple, when you meet someone tell more about yourself. Open up a little.

A few years ago, during a hospital stay for eight weeks, with an antibiotic drip in my arm for six weeks, a band on my left arm that said, "Reserve for Dialysis." I lost my phobia about people. Perhaps it was the nurses, who helped me, in spite of me. Perhaps it was the realization that I might not leave the hospital alive; though, I did not suffer a code and have to be revived.

Two additional things happened about that time. I'd been flirting with being vegan for a while, because my PCP recommended it for health reasons. And, I"d been suffering with a bad foot pain, left foot, for more than five years with no viable pain killers. It was similar to having a toe cut off every day and being given no pain meds, for more than five years. LOL, of course one doesn't have that many toes.

Anyway, after being admitted to the hospital, the doctor took me off my blood pressure meds. My plant-based (i.e., vegan) whole--food (as little processed food as possible) diet had lowered my blood pressure. Incredibly, my foot pain had also stopped. When I finally got over the systemic infection and hospital food, I was convinced a plant-based whole-food diet was for me. Since then I've lost weight about 125 pounds, and expect I'll lose another 125 pounds. I will be the person whom I have always wanted to be. In the mean time, I've had success dieting and a corresponding elevaton of my self worth.

I believe everyone can have success with weight control, because it really hasn't been difficult for me, except the first part, changing one's diet to include much more vegetables, including salads. In general I believe the vegetables are more nutritious than meat and meat products like milk and eggs, because the fat in meat is dense in calories and will put weight on you, compared to a salad or cooked vegetables. Moreover, the vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals reduce hunger in ways that fat cannot. Thus, you can eat heavy foods and continue to be hungry. Greens are bitter, and I don't like them much, but I do eat them often. They make a big difference.

Good to see you! Some days I feel like I'm talking to myself but I guess that is OK, I'm about as interesting as the next person. 😉 Good to hear you're progressing in your health pursuit/weight loss. That reduced BP and foot pain is a great thing and given how you describe that pain, it is lucky you found something to help it. That kind of chronic pain can eventually become more than a person can deal with and lead to multiple bad "fixes".

I can't bring myself to go to the vegan side, although I don't eat a large amount of meat, milk or eggs. However, I do enjoy "greens", particularly kale, spinach and romaine lettuce. They are definitely a positive in the diet. My kale plants that overwintered, are already providing enough leaves for a small harvest every few days. I need to try chard as I'd like more greens that I am able to grow. Have not mastered growing spinach or lettuce. Mustard greens are a possibility, too.

@DotLewis I got a basil plant, and it adds a nice taste to salads. I need to root a few cuttings and increase the size of my harvest. IMO there are two things about meat that are bad, one caused by factory farming is meat is loaded with harmones, pesticides and other chemicals, some of which cause cancer. In addition, the fat can be a problem, but can be mediated with omega-3 fatty acids.

If you eat mostly vegetables and maintain an Omega-3 to other fat ration of 1:4 or better (e.g., 1:3) your likelihood of a long lifespan is pretty good. The vegetables keep your immune system strong, and will kill all kinds of toxic cells, including cancer cells.

For weight management, one must eat fewer calories. For many, including me, it is a battle to stop using food for pleasure. A good calorie goal is half of the FDA recommended amount.

I think you are doing great overall. Keep up the good work, you are a role model for our members.

Hiding because one is ashamed of being fat is counter productive, it enables being fat. Be brave, and lose weight. Tell us about yourselves, folks.

Good for you. I was hungry after I got in bed last night. I sometimes wish I could fall asleep whenever I went to bed. Actually, of o went between 6-8pm, it would be no problem, then "second wind" hits me and I won't fall asleep again until after midnight. I resist the temptation to nap in that early evening slump, it only makes things worse.

The good news is, if I need to be up and going bright and early, I rarely have a problem with it. I spent 30+ years running on short sleep, rarely asleep before midnight and up to be at work by 8:30. Retirement has been heavenly, just being able to get around 8 hours of sleep most nights. Did have to implement the mandatory bedtime though as I was pushing ot later and later and staying in bed until noon was just not feasible. Hope to push bedtime to 1am by fall, maybe with the help of DST switch.
