16 June 2019 - Diet Diary - So, of course having been less than 1 lb from my goal this morning, I had to engage in a little self-defeating behavior today and consume around 1500 calories. Wasn't really my intent but a waffle sounded really great this morning and I've been wanting to try out my Belgian waffle maker that I found at a garage sale.

Used a mix, not a recipe, Krusteaz (sp) brand and I was SHOCKED I tell you by the delightful outcome. I was not so delighted at the number of calories in ONE waffle. It was enough that they listed the nutritional breakdown for 1/2 of a 7" waffle. Now, I don't know about you guys but I have trouble considering 1/2 a waffle to be a "serving", or at least a meal. Of course I ate a whole waffle, with some lite yogurt on top. Delish, but a bad start for the day.

The good news is, when I finally reach a weight point, even though I may go back up a little the next few days, I will get back down to that point. It seems kind of like I have to break that barrier then I can play around near it but it is no longer unattainable. So, today I did hit my lowest point so far, 140.6, just 0.6 from where I have been aiming for the past 2 years. Feeling good about that.

I have been offered "belgian Waffle makers" by many a kind and generous friend and family...and will not succumb to having one.

No matter how "nutritious" the ingredients, you're basically making a newer, unusual form of bread - a carb that's proved deadly to dieters and those trying to lose weight.

I wouldn't pay a penny if I saw one at a garage sale...and I love garage sales!

But kudos on reaching your goal weight!

Mine's still 7 pounds away; and I've been hovering in the mid 140's too long, now. Time to get serous.

That is fantastic. Congratulations! It wouldn't surprise me if you go a little below your goal and then hover around it. You must be really pleased with yourself in spite of the waffle. You are certainly entitled to be! If it were me, the only thing to do would be to put the waffle iron away out of sight. For me it would only be brought out when big-eating visitors like sons and grandsons come to visit. Are you going to keep up the reports once you are on maintenance?

Thanks! I have recently thought that I might go a little lower, mostly because it has gone very slowly the last 5 pounds but having a little more to work toward would keep me working toward a goal. I think I will be OK though at just being on maintenance. I do intend to continue reporting pretty frequently because it will be part of what keeps me maintaining. If I have no one but myself to answer to, it is easy to slack and that quickly goes to lost progress.

As to the waffle thing, although I love Belgian waffles, I have had this waffle maker for over a year and this was the first time I've used it. It lives in a cupboard, being in sight all the time would not be good for me. I will be getting rid of my old waffle iron, a standard type, which I haven't used for a couple years. Despite liking waffles, I just don't take the effort to make them, just go to the pancake if I'm wanting to whip up a nice carb for breakfast. 😉 @robecology

While these Belgian waffles were MUCH better than the average waffle, they are likely to remain an occasional treat or as @CeliaVL suggested, for when company comes. I am counting on my self control and determination to keep me on the right path. Bad for diet stuff is always available. Even if I severely limit what I bring into the house, what I cook, where/what I eat outside my own kitchen, the diet killers are always there.

Every trip to the store, every "party" I might be at, every visit to someone's house or lunch date opens me up to consuming stuff that will set me back. I have to rely on my judgement and control to keep me from returning to old patterns of eating and obesity. For me, part of that is having things in the house that require me to decide, do I have a BOWL of ice cream or do I have 1/2 cup of ice cream, a cup of trail mix or 1 ounce of trail mix.

If it becomes an issue, things can be banished, for example, I do avoid having potato chips in the house because that is one thing I have trouble limiting my servings on. It is rare that I purchase them and will likely continue that practice. (especially cheddar cheese Pringles) Each of us is different in how they function, I know people who just never keep stuff around that is not good for their diet. That works for them, if they have it in the house, they will eat it.

For me, if I view it as "I CAN'T have this, I CAN'T eat that" I start to feel "deprived" in some way, then I want it more. It can't have it because I never let it be in the house, to compensate, I eat something else. Didn't allow any ice cream in the house, too much sugar, empty calories. So, I eat 3 servings of grapes, an extra piece of meat, another low fat yogurt...... So, in the end I took in more calories than had I given myself that 1/2 cup of ice cream.

OK, got carried away. Need to post for today and get off this thing. It is raining and I'm enjoying the sound, going to bed sounds good.
