29 June 2019 - Diet Diary - HOT, HOT, HOT! It hit at least 103° today, maybe higher. The bank sign said 107° but it usually runs higher than the bank sign downtown. Either way, it was hot. Still, went on errands, watered garden and cleaned the backyard. (poo patrol) Picked up fried chicken (Chester's) and took it to eat with the neighbor. Only ate half a piece, 1/4 of the potato side and 1/8 of the biscuit and thanks to eating light up until that time, still finished the day at 1065. Salt was way up, commercial fried chicken will do that.

Made the kale salad I was planning but didn't eat it since plan change turned to chicken. Will have it tomorrow. Tried some daylily blooms in it, they are kind of sweet tasting, should be a nice addition and they look pretty mixed with all that green kale. Learned important lesson about weighing foods today.

Although I often do weigh portions to get an idea what the "serving" should look like. Never bothered to weigh kale before, just went by cup measurement. It pops on the diet tracker in "cup, chopped" measurement and also grams in that cup. Put my ingredient list into the recipe analyzer, having put the kale into a measuring cup as I chopped. Came up with 8 cups of chopped kale, in my thinking but on entering it was astounded at how many calories that came out to be. It showed 270 calories, just seemed quite high to me for greens.

So, decided to weigh the kale, then put in as grams used. This brought it up as 84 calories. Obviously, when they measure chopped kale, they pack it into the cup, rather than just drop it in, all fluffy and such. Turns out, even with the dressing and sunflower seeds, a large serving of the salad is under 200 calories. Since I use a lot of kale, will remember to do this in the future, yesterday, I had kale, lambs quarters, daylily buds, onion and garlic, sauteed with a couple strips of bacon. Now that is some good stuff!

Back from my "no diet/eat-all-you-want" 2 week trip. I thought I gained a lot more; the scale at home says I'm still in the 140's (a couple pounds gained)...so time to get hungry again!

Good job! Keeping gain under 5 lbs while on a 2 week "eat-all-you-want" break is pretty darn good. After 2years doing this, I find that I am usually aware of what I'm eating(with occasional lapses) even when I am having a "cheat day".

While I sometimes exceed my daily loss/maintenance intake level, it has been a long time since I went totally overboard, like 2500-3000+ calories, which used to be a common occurrence for me. Of course, at 205 pounds, it took those kinds of intake from time to time to maintain that weight.

I hope that self-awareness is sustainable over the years as it will make it easier to maintain the weight over without always having to add up everything I eat.

Sounds like a nice garden veg dish. In the UK we don't use the cup measurement system, we do everything by weight, which I find clearer. It is hot here, too, which I find reduces the range of things I feel like eating. Doesn't stop me eating ice-cream though!

I read about 🔥HOT in your neighborhood. Manure combustion and wildfires. Could be a matter of time everywhere, not getting better any time soon, as far as I can see. However, ice cream helps!

Weighing food is definitely more accurate. So many things, when measures in cups, depend greatly on how you pack it in the cup. What i was calling around 7.5 cups turned out to be equal to 2.5 cups when weighed.

On the other hand, I weighed out my ice cream last time I bought some. I have a bunch of small containers, sold as 1/2 cup containers. But, if I fill that container, it weighs significantly more than the grams listed as a serving on the carton.

This is not the fault of the container however, I get the same result if I use a measuring cup. i think the manufacturer doesn't want to say that a "serving" is really more like 1/3 of a cup so they list the grams as well, knowing most people will never question it.

@DotLewis Having trusted containers is helpful. I go away for 6-8 weeks every summer, leaving my husband his meals in the freezer. I have a heap of mini-icecream containers that i pack helpings of cooked rice into which hold 100 grams of rice, which is just right for him. The way I pack the containers makes the weights vary between 90 and 110 though, so I know what you mean about how things pack down.
