I'm not using my wheelchair in the house, and have been exercising to increase my stamina. Have been keeping my food intake to between 1000-1200 calories of plant based whole foods, mostly. I sometimes walk without my cane for a few steps. However, I'm not really steady enough to walk without some aid, for the time being.

Sounds as if you are keeping up the progress. There is nothing wrong with walking with a cane until you feel really confident. Better that than a fall.
