19 August 2019 - Diet Diary - Last couple days were for some reason hectic. Didn't get around to posting and last night didn't even check the computer for email. Today scammers called me, posing as from DISH network, which I use. Had enough info to be pretty convincing, UNTIL they told me the REQUIRED hardware update would cost me $99 (DISH has never charged me for a receiver) and when I questioned that they said "No, you don't have the insurance to cover new equipment" which sounded like BS. Also told me if I didn't take the upgrade, I would lose my signal.

THEN, he wanted to "verify" my payment method of record and gave me the last 4 on a credit card and wanted me to verify the other numbers. Firstly, I think that credit card has expired and I put a new one on the account and secondly, if they HAD the other numbers, they would not need to "verify" them. Told him I wasn't giving him that info. He started arguing, I said NO, I will call DISH and sort it out, good bye" and hung up. He called back immediately, wanted to know what the problem was. Told him I NEVER provide credit card info on phone calls and repeated that I would call DISH and sort it out. He was saying something like "then go ahead" and I hung up again.

Eventually I was able to get through to DISH tech support and asked about this call. They verified what I suspected, they will NOT call home to home to push upgrades. If upgrades occur it is when customer calls and requests. However, the info I did provide regarding my receiver model would not cause any issues as my account is secure. He also reported they have had a number of calls regarding this.

AWW, SHIT! Just realized I did give them him the security code for the DISH account and if they get into that, they can look up my credit card info. OK, called Discover and locked down the account which is still untouched, until I get this sorted out. What a freaking circus! I've had it for today. To top it off, it is still HOT outside so air the fan is pulling in is not much cooler than what is already in here.

Sorry to dump that out there, just really frustrated at this point. However, the good news of the day: I broke a new low, today was at 136.0! Ate within limits, came in just under 1200 for the day. Didn't stress eat!! Hope I can avoid that tomorrow.

If you didn't "stress" eat after all that...it's no wonder you've reached a new low! Congrats on putting the brakes on the "stress-eating""!

Thanks. Although my BP popped way up in the evening, likely because of dealing with this, it didn't actually seem like the kind of stress that really prompts eating for me. The more subtle stress is when I really struggle to stay in control.

Scammers can be fun. I want to tell them I received a card about whatever their scam is in the mail a few days ago and it promised a free trial pack of gum. If they confirm to get me to go along I’ll start excitedly asking specific questions about the free gum. Hopefully, They’ll get really pissed off and hang up. I forget his name but a guy did a ted talk about emailing scammers about a free toaster, that’s where I got the idea.

Posted by DotLewis7 March 2020 - Diet Diary - Been quiet around here lately. I've not been on vacation, just keeping a low profile and trying to stay on top of things. Are those things incompatible?
