So I was up at 4:00am debating whether or not to make myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My biggest issue with my weight is the fact that I snack when I'm bored, lonely, angry, anxious, frustrated, or depressed. Yes to all right now, except for the boredom because I should go back to sleep... I'd been severely overweight most of my adult life, losing close to 100 lbs. over the last couple of years do to a combination of lifestyle changes and illness. Only the thing is, I've put some of it back on over the last six months or so because I've started going back to old habits. Not good... At the very least I know I can pass on the sandwich because I'm on Agnostic.com and also posting here in this group. I'll have to start being more mindful again about my food triggers overall, but one step at a time.
Putting weight back on after you managed to get it off is so depressing. I know the situation well, having done it all my life. I am making yet another effort since I am in danger of making myself permanently disabled if I don't get my weight down and keep it down. I am hoping that chatting to other people on this site will help me overcome my tendency to eat when bored, fed-up, etc. We all know the issues, and ignorance about food is not really our problem, so the best thing we can do is support each other and be around for a chat when things are hard.
Hey you...next time think of HALT..hungry angry tired lonely..if you're anyone of these don't eat..start a mental precedent and try to recognize when you do what was the motivating factor..it works for me most of the time..but then I do allow myself treats..awesome job I am on the weightloss express as well
I have never been obese but I've been overweight. I have found that fasting, especially intermittent fasting, to be the easiest way to lose or maintain my weight. Intermittent fasting is done by restricting eating to only a few hours per day. Usually I do it by waiting until noon before I have my first meal. After the first meal, I snack lightly until 6 or 8 p.m. Dealing with the feelings of hunger isn't very hard if I apply a few mental techniques. First, I acknowledge that the hunger is uncomfortable, but not too much so. It is more easily tolerable when I focus on it while letting all thoughts about it drift away. Essentially, this is a meditation on hunger. The "intolerable" part of hunger comes from thinking about it, having thoughts like, "this is too much," or "I can't stand it." So with meditation, feeling the hunger without eating is more easily possible. Also, with the meditation, I don't think of making any moves to get food. Before we eat something, we make a move toward the food which is preceded by a thought of doing so. If I have no thoughts of getting food, then I don't eat.
You may think I'm nuts. My wife started making peanut butter and broccoli sandwitches, and they are good. The peanut butter more or less smothers the broccoli flavor, and it is crunchy.
I like peanut butter and dried cranberries or dried blueberries better than the broccoli. They are sweeter, but good for you too, in moderation. However, I believe short breads have too much salt, and yeast breads are too rich. Whole grains, like brown rice release sugar into your body slower than bread and jelly.
Thus, next time you think of a PBJ, make a bowl of brown rice with a table spoon or two of peanut butter and a few dried cranberries or blueberries for sweetener. We cook a cup of rice and leave it in the frige, cooked. That way, putting together that bowl of rice is quick. But, we eat rice often.
No, do not eat rice. That’s the worst thing you can eat. That’s all carbs.
@jperlow Oh really. I think you should watch "Forks Over Knives." It is on both Netflix and youtube, made by several doctors and a PhD biochemist. The fact is, almost everything one eats is either fat (oil), protein, and carbohydrates. Fat has more calories per gram than any other food. It is best for obease people to avoid. Protein is the next most calories per gram. Simple carbohydrates like sugars, including lactose (milk) are next in calories per gram. Finally, complex carbohydrates, like brown rice, salads, and rainbow vegetables are the least calories per gram. The FDA diet is nonsense AFAIK. I'm eating the a vegan diet, as prescribed by my doctor and two cardiologists and a PhD biochemist as explained in Forks Over Knives. As far as I am concerned, your dietary warnings are poor advice.
@EdEarl yes really. As I told you I was 420lbs, now 240. And I had bariatric surgery and the post op protocol for that to keep the weight off is low carb. It is not just calories which yes, you do need to restrict. It is the fact that unburned carbs and sugars turn into fat. You are morbidly obese. You will die if you do not have the surgery and also change your habits.
@jperlow
216 calories / cup brown rice cooked
1910 calories / cup olive oil
614 calories / cup cooked lean ground beef
1243 calories / cup sugar
Oh, protein is less than sugar.
Almost 9 cups of brown rice = calories in 1 cup olive oil.
Almost 6 cups of brown rice = calories in 1 cup sugar
Almost 3 cups of brown rice = calories in 1 cup hamburger.
Enjoy the rest of your life, Ed.
@jperlow I fully understand the consequences and intend to get the surgery. However, your advice about diet is out of date. I am loosing weight, and will loose more. After starting my current diet, while weighing 400+ my blood pressure went to normal. The pain I suffered for 8 years stopped. And, I'm loosing weight. There is no way in hell I'm going back to the FDA diet.
Weight loss is simple but not easy. Change is the biggest challenge. A friend passed 2 months ago, months before he admitted it was easier to accept death over change.
I found over watching films like super size me, fat, sick & nearly dead and even my 600lb life kept me focused
If I get the urge I just decide to drink a cup of water or diluted fruit juice (usually 20-30% fruit juice, the rest water), works most of the time.
Herbal tea with a bit of lemon (or not) is a good alternative.
Posted by OldMetalHeadI hit a new weight milestone this week. Still trying for the six-pack.
Posted by OldMetalHeadThe hardest part for me is not falling back into old bad habits after meeting goals.

Posted by JonnaBononnaI had finally gotten back on track after gaining back most of the weight I lost a couple of years ago.
Posted by JurneeI have to say, as an overweight karate instructor, this is the one patch that I was ok with never getting.
