I started a month ago using this forum to hold me accountable in my quest to not eat sweets. The first week I did not eat any. The following three weeks I have been in a pattern of having sweets three days of the week. Not my intended goal but I'm not struggling to stick to that plan. I was having sweets two to three times a day, so I can live with three sweets a week. The rest of my diet still needs work but I need a victory at this moment. Some change in my diet I can stick to over time.
It may be you're doing it backwards. Try eating the healthy foods FIRST... they may eliminate your cravings for the sugar. The body wants what it wants, but reward the body with super-healthy foods and it will likely do a brain re-program and adjust to skipping the sugar/fat shortcuts to satisfy the cravings. That was the AMAZING thing I learned by eating ONLY single-ingredient foods for a while (a year).... my body and brain completely forgot all about fast food and bakery items. I have to walk through the bakery and deli area in my store to get to the fresh fruit and veggie dept. (you KNOW they did that intentionally!), but nothing there is of interest to me any longer. I walk right past my old favorites without even a hint of cravings. Brain on a whole new track. Gimme the veggies! I've lost 70# with NO pain, no suffering, no lock on the refrigerator. Trust me, you can do this.
Substitute fruit for your sweets, but limit yourself to no more than two per day. Loosing weight is about changing your food habits (preferences). Stop eating something and you loose the desire to have it eventually. Start eating something you barely like, and you will begin to like it better quickly. Stay away from processed foods that have chemicals in them you cannot pronounce. Read the food labels, and make choices that are better for you.
Keep up the good work. You don't have to suffer if you are patient and consistent at changing your food preferences.
Yes, EdEarl...exactly! It's the bad stuff in the PROCESSED and REFINED foods that's messing with people's heads, driving them to eat more of the same. But remember, things like SUGAR and SALT already ARE bad by being "refined". If it has a long list of "ingredients", stop reading after 3 items... it's not for you! Single-ingredient natural foods, with NOTHING added is what you need to lose the extra flab without the gym membership, the diet foods by mail, the 12-step meetings, etc. Mix the single foods however you want (salads, soups, omelets, etc), but do not add salts, sugar, oils or chemicals of any kind. You can use all the salt-free spices you want (Mrs Dash). You can all do this on your own for no cost and gain enormous health benefits. I was months away from full-blown diabetes, but now all is well. Wish I'd done this 25-years ago.
Posted by OldMetalHeadI hit a new weight milestone this week. Still trying for the six-pack.
Posted by OldMetalHeadThe hardest part for me is not falling back into old bad habits after meeting goals.

Posted by JonnaBononnaI had finally gotten back on track after gaining back most of the weight I lost a couple of years ago.
Posted by JurneeI have to say, as an overweight karate instructor, this is the one patch that I was ok with never getting.

Posted by DotLewis7 March 2020 - Diet Diary - Been quiet around here lately. I've not been on vacation, just keeping a low profile and trying to stay on top of things. Are those things incompatible?
