A post from a relatively obscure composer and Church member (early in his life) which changed with time...

Ralph Vaughan-williams.

[en.wikipedia.org]

Not sure about how "agnostic" he was;

Please fill me in?

Vaughan-Williams is not obscure in the UK.
Though a life long agnostic, his love for his father, who was a protestant priest, and his love for his childhood homes spent in pastoral buildings and churches, never allowed him to fully step away from religion, hence his many quotes like the above, that a respectful agnostic like himself could easily, empathetically and respectfully write or create music, literature, architecture or art for the church, purely as an aesthetic endeavor.
The Lark Ascending is his most famous work.

He was partially deafened fighting in WW1 shortly after writing this, but continued to compose in to his eighties by which time he was totally deaf. In the 1950's he was a notable humorous TV personality and wit in the UK. Hope this helps

One of my favorites! Thanks....

Thanks!
