Because Star Trek has always been this cool.

The Fellow who shared this in my Star Trek Cat posting group (really) said that it kept him from killing himself when he was in junior high. It was that one example of someone like him that made him realize he wasn't alone.

I do remember seeing that in some of the earlier episodes. It just goes to show Gene Roddenberry's vision of a world where equality ruled and bigotry and judgementalism were shunned. Star Trek, at least through Voyager embodied genes core principles. One of the many reasons I love Star Trek!
