I won't wish that he gets beaten up in prison. I won't shed any tears if he does.

This is a bit of a double-edged sword. A lot of people avoid getting tested because of the perceived legal liability of knowingly putting others at risk. And this conviction isn't going to help those with an "If I don't know, then I can't be guilty of wilfully infecting anyone" mentality. Someone with HIV, on medication and with undetectable viral load is unable to pass on the infection. The real spread of HIV at the moment is amongst people who aren't being diagnosed and treated.

But this seems to be a particularly malicious case of someone setting out to deliberately spread the infection, rather than not caring whether they do. Pushing people to have unprotected sex or sabotaging condoms, it's quite clear that this guy's mission was one of deliberately infecting others with a life changing disease.

I just hope it hasn't set a precedent for people with HIV being in the wrong for not disclosing if not asked. There's joint responsibility to be had when it comes to safe sex, and really, if you don't want HIV, you shouldn't be having unprotected receptive anal sex with someone unless you've built some trust and at least had a discussion about history, testing and risk.

Yet plenty of guys, in the heat of the moment, don't care whether they're playing safe or not. I've seen them in gay saunas, face down on beds, not caring who comes in, what they do, or whether they use protection. They could be on PrEP or already have an HIV positive diagnosis, but I doubt that's the case for the majority. Of course they care massively the next time they get tested and the result comes back positive. But then you can bet it's everyone's fault but theirs.
