Most people thought it was a joke and a publicity stunt and underestimated him. Something that should never have happened.

@Pralina1 This was Grover Norquist quest for a president that was only smart enough to sign his name and the Republicans would ram through all their programs and loot the treasury before any one was the wiser.

@Pralina1, @glennlab & the Media played right into it, he received so much airtime during the primaries, far more than any other candidate, because he was like a car wreck you can't look away from! Anybody that knew of him from before (he even got a number of storylines in Doonesbury over the years, as well as RS & other mags) knew what a scumbag he was.

@phxbillcee I have been aware of him since he was a civil rights violator and walking billboard for the northern racist movement in the 1970s. He was the classic northern racist, where the discrimination is hidden, but just as damaging as the overt southern racism.
