This is the beginning of him questioning his faith. Within a year he will become an atheist, and leave his Christian significant other for an atheist woman.

If she's laying in bed mentally accusing him of, at the very least emotional, infidelity, he may be better off with an atheist woman.

Hopefully he was smart enough to put the termites at the top so they could work themselves down without causing too much structural damage. The bigger question is did he have to bring all the sea life onto the boat, or did they just follow it?
