The timeline of gun laws in America. I guess we won't get anything sane until another President gets shot/killed. ?
1968 NRA position:
Congressional hearings followed and a ban on mail-order gun sales was discussed, but no law was passed until 1968. At the hearings NRA Executive Vice-President Franklin Orth supported a ban on mail-order sales, stating, "We do not think that any sane American, who calls himself an American, can object to placing into this bill the instrument which killed the president of the United States."[3][4]

Osawld also bought the pistol he used to kill the police officer via mail order. You still can have a firearm delivered in the mail. UPS will do it, but it has to go to a FFL dealer. Also 1968 was the year that serial numbers were required.
As far as tracking firearms, I bought a pistol a few weeks ago. It has not only a serial number, but behind the trigger guard has an electronic serial number! You know the goofy square that you take a pic of and directs you to a website? I don't know what they are called, but I'm sure you know what I am talking about.
The NRA we have now is NOTHING like the one we had in 1968.
A Republican, at that. Never hurts until it hits the right spot.
