I am a gun owner. I fully support gun control measures. No one NEEDS an assault style weapon, and NO it is NOT in the 2nd amendment that you can own any weapon you please. Completely fed up with the gunners who think they can/should.
Gun Culture Is So Deeply Rooted In The U.S. Gun Control Will Never Be An Option.
I'm inclined to agree. OTOH, I'm sure the same was (reasonably, at one time) said and thought about slavery. In my lifetime, I witnessed a sea change in the attitudes about homosexuality. I also thought I'd never live to see a black (or even half-black) president. I guess, like all prognostication, we'll just have to see how it all plays out!
Me too. My dad bought a shotgun and took me skeet shooting when we first moved to California in the 70s. I've shot off and on since then. I noticed the gun culture starting to change in the 90s. It used to be older guys who liked to hunt or do target practice. In the 90s, it started to be younger, wanna-be military guys (they never were actual vets, but just acted like they were) who were obsessed with "stopping power" and big magazines, and fantasies that they and their Glock could somehow defeat the US military if ever the "guvmint" turned against us. It got to the point that I never went to the range anymore.
I grew up in FL, and I would say what you are describing actually began in the 80's. The movie, "Red Dawn" was their anthem.
That may well be true here, too. I didn't really go much in the 80s... maybe once that whole decade!
