Many teachers and parents discourage experimentation because it's messy or dangerous or whatever; however, experimentation is a very important aspect of critical thinking. Instead of discouraging children from experimenting, we should take advantage of their interest, encourage them to explore and find answers and not worry about making mistakes or "failing." We should provide them with guidance in making investigations, helping them find resources, and revel in their discoveries.

Experience. Eventually a child will have to try and fail. In most cultures, failures are villified which should not be the case. Once a child can get past the shame of failure, everything's easy for it. For adults too.
