What is the real difference between a child who is capable of trying experiments and innovations and one who is afraid to attempt these things? What is the cause of such differences? Please make clear what age of child you are talking about.

As a science educator working with future elementary teachers, this is a relevant issue. Many teachers and parents discourage experimentation because it's messy or dangerous or whatever; however, experimentation is a very important aspect of critical thinking. Instead of discouraging children from experimenting, we should take advantage of their interest, encourage them to explore and find answers and not worry about making mistakes or "failing." We should provide them with guidance in making investigations, helping them find resources, and revel in their discoveries.

My first thought is a controlling parent who reprimands a child every time they fail.

Experience. Eventually a child will have to try and fail. In most cultures, failures are villified which should not be the case. Once a child can get past the shame of failure, everything's easy for it. For adults too.

I think environment plays a big part in this. Encouragement and leading by example.

The age makes no difference. It all depends on the upbring of the child who is influenced by parents and culture on the one hand and their own experiences on the other !
