I have a PhD in computer science and am an academic in the Faculty of Technology at De Montfort University, UK. I specialise in real time modelling of physical systems and novel human computer interfaces. Basically I make things that go beep.

What programs/languages do you use for modeling?

It varies. Software prototypes are usually done with MATLAB, or Max/MSP and a custom java library I made. Firmware I might tinker a bit with Arduino. If anything needs to be developed into a "product" then I will get as close to the metal as possible for the platform in question, usually some form of C. I've done very bizarre things in the past with RPG, and GEO but I know better than to sign up for anything like that now!

@Rufus_Maximus wow that's quite a skill set! I took Matlab a while ago in undergrad, and recently got thrown back into it with Symbiology application of Matlab. I was thinking to get more into it, but my University only offers Matlab on cluster, so executing algorithms will be a pain in a butt.

@Blizzard do they limit your access to processing time? Matlab used to be available as a personal student license, I think it cost around £60, which is a f***ing insane saving; might be worth a look!

@Rufus_Maximus I'm afraid they do have limits. I think in the US the license costs about a hundred bucks, but I think there is also an additional fee for Symbiology
