I would guess that many of the mammals and some of the non-mammals know that they are alive. Just because they don't express it in a manner we understand doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

One thing scientists are sure of, and that is that consciousness requires neural connections between several different areas of the brain. When those connections are interrupted, such as in sleep, consciousness is lost.
