How do you begin to be comfortable in your own skin? What do you do to gain/maintain self confidence?

I think you should start by forgiving yourself for being less than perfect.

I stopped giving a flying fig about what other people thought of me.

I refused to brother myself with what other people think and say about me

I find those frequent encounters with my full length mirror most helpful. while I keep my illusions about beauty, youth and attractiveness alive in my heart of hearts, Reality is my friend. Yes, it is.

That's a good question. Some are comfortable and others are not. Medication may be the answer. Anxiety plays a role with what you're describing. Awareness of one's self is the best way to self confidence.
How many musical instruments can you play with confidence?

@celticagent
That's 5 more than me. I appreciate anyone who can play. Your work must be very gratifying. Thank you for what you do!

@flower_nut oh, it is?

I attend body positive events. I have a group of friends that occasionally do a "Naked Thursday" dinner party. It isn't about sex, just about getting comfortable with others seeing you naked in a non-sexual context. It is very liberating and humbling to see various body types and sizes represented and everyone is being respectful. There was one of these parties the week before Thanksgiving which I attended with a new friend. We both had a great time.

I love your comment

@JimPlatt2 Burning Man and all of the local "Burn" events are also respectful about other people's right to express themselves. There is a lot of nudity and semi nudity by people of all body types. Going to those events is also very liberating and when you decide to participate you do begin to feel comfortable in your own skin. There will always be societal reminders that "beauty" looks a certain way or has little to no body fat, but when you surround yourself with people who celebrate beauty in all of its shapes, sizes, colors, and orientations, I have found that life is a much better place to live.

@Nukdookum I am basically a life long nudist, will be til i die, and almost wish I could have the viewing bare naked....the beauty of a human body, is not to be judged by what others think but by your own admission and acceptance of it.

There was a time I was. Independent, supportive, complimentary, and slowly the world has changed. I know overall it is for the good, BUT, once we move beyond the basics of existence. it gets complicated...today I am becoming more and more frustrated. Life like computer programming, every time I become learned, and comfortable with a program, someone changes it and what we learned becomes less valuable...

It all depends on why you aren't self confident. Once you know, work on overcoming or accepting that "flaw." Few people have flaws that are so bad they cannot, for example:

Keep a back scratcher handy. Best if it's another person.
