Hey it has been a while since I put anything here and then I saw one of the members asking for us to get jiggy with it. (posting pieces) This first piece was written in 1979. I was already over monotheism. The poem is about how monotheism is a farce. Please don't be offended. I did my research back then and Jewish people were once slaves owners. So when you read the poem please do not go off the deep end and scream at me. This is about monotheism not the Jewish people

1979
New Orleans Louisiana
Sing a Song of Praises

Rent a Christian for an hour
Rent a pagan for a year
Rent a slave for a life time through the hole in his ear

It’s the year of jubilee, All the Jews shout and scream
Seven years have come and gone, All the slaves grovel on the ground

Be a sinner burn in Hades
Be a saint and sweat as well
God is one big mystery, who rules the heavens and the hells

Morals are made for minions, Pleasure is plowed by fools
Secretes stored in scrolls, Are not unraveled in homes or schools

Holy, Holy, Holy
Shouts the priest on high
Where’s our bread and manna, the layman cries inside

We beat our breast a plenty, we sweat our backs are sore
We give our tithe the true percent, and yet you shout for more

What is not a mere assumption, if we have but fables based in fear
How’s it not a chance we’re taking, when we pursue this god who does not hear?

Miracles are mirages that we savor with hungry eyes
We beat our breasts we say our prayers
We live each other’s lies

Rent a Christian for an hour, Rent a pagan for a year
Rent a slave for a lifetime through the hole in his ear

It’s the year of jubilee all the Jews shout and scream

End

The year of jubilee in the old testament occurred every seven years. Jewish people who wanted to atone for sins were required to release their slaves and set them free. If a slave loved their master so much that they prefered to stay a slave then the Master would pierce their ear with an awl and leave a hole. So please don't be angry. This piece is about the futility of religious dogma nothing more.

And to be recognised as a slave of Judaism remove the trousers and try to find a foreskin?
Thanks for the "hole in ear" explanation it had me puzzled. I loved the use of the chorus.

Your epilogue made the poem more meaningful for me.
