Birds, Humans, and Mirrors by JT Daughton
a bird does not like
to be alone,
preferring company, of either sex,
in an intimacy most humans
do not understand, or believe.
a bird is not human,
still, both are animals,
of community, with some outliers.
community by nature, or in nature,
is forgiving of the most
grievous sins, real or imagined.
community places itself
in the mirror's view
and sees what it thinks to be truth.
mirrors do not reflect truth,
they distort it.
a bird does not like
to be alone, relishing companionship.
what does a bird see in the mirror -
it will attack the image.
what does a human see in the mirror -
the distorted truth that breaks boundaries;
the distorted truth that whispers platitudes.
many more birds can live in harmony,
than humans, forced to be neighbors,
by community of nature, or in nature.
do not seek companionship
in your mirrored image,
for that is just an illusion,
a trick played by reality's jesters.
seek companionship in community,
and do not allow it to accept:
the distorted truths, or,
the whispered platitudes.
