There’s quite a large area all down the west coast where Irish is spoken as a first language, stretching from Co. Donegal in the north and it follows the “Atlantic Way” all the way to the south coast and around as far as Co Waterford. It’s designated as a protected language and the areas where it’s spoken are called The Gaeltacht...although everyone in Ireland also speaks English.

Actually I know all that. My brother whilst in Kerry had an affair with a Gaeltacht woman which resulted in my nephew who has just obtained a PhD in Gaelic studies out of Galway. He has visited me here.My uncle, who was a TCD professor was pretty darn sniffy about Gaeltacht, saying that they just made words up. He should have kept his opinions to his world expertise in botany. Yup, sorry he was my mother's brother. Died outside Oxford. I went to a post funeral there of Oxford dons.
