100 years ago the Russian Revolution created much consternation in the UK. In Scotland a handful of people working to better the lot of the common people gave even more consternation. One man in particular, a school teacher, John McLean was a respected orator. For his views he was frequently jailed and tortured. One of his enduring phrases was "war is a rifle with a working man at either end". As a result of the agitation occurring in Glasgow, the British Army in the form of battle hardened WWI troops were sent in with tanks.
Back in about about 2000 Alistair Hulett wrote a wonderful musical suite called " Red Clydeside" and issued it on cd. He died not long after. Here he is with the title track "Red Clydesiders"
However I recommend the whole suite and it's accompanying booklet to anyone interested in learning of real history or "the people's long memory" partly narrated in this clip revealing bare history of John McLean and societal conditions 100 years ago. **I hope that many will take pause to consider what believers like McLean endured in order to try to benefit their fellow humans and note how young he was when he died.**

I believe the same troops were sent to Ireland where the Irish called them the "Black and Tans".
