Something special about the traditional Scottish songs. I can't listen to Flower of Scotland with out a rush of emotion ...thanks for sharing

On Flower of Scotland - it is a song written only 40-50 years ago in the folk idiom but about the 1314 victory over the English at Bannockburn. [en.m.wikipedia.org]
Here are the Corries including the late Roy Williamson, the songwriter with the original version -

We live here (in Northern Ireland) where Scottish folk songs about English oppression are viewed as cultural whereas Irish folk songs about the same subject are viewed as sectarian. I guess time scale has a lot to do with it. ?. Nice tune, wonderful delivery. ?

I always thought that the later Bonnie Prince Charlie events were as much Catholic Tykes against Proddy dogs as anything?
I'm also suddenly curious - do any Irish songs still exist from the time of Brian Boru possessing Dublin and a couple of other Viking cities?

That's religiosity for you. I noticed in a very small village of less than 2000 in W. Victoria, originally settled by Lutheran Germans, Scottish Catholics and Protestants that there was still ruthless economic favouritism based through religious ties. In Northern Ireland where I met some of the most hospitable people, I have ever encountered ... And of both religious persuasions, I noticed similar favouritism - I was only a boy of 16 visiting and hitchhiking for several weeks in my school holidays.
The reoccurrence of the troubles always seriously upset me as my views were coloured by the wonderful strangers that I met.

@FrayedBear I agree, about some of the Scottish songs although I think the meaning of some of them have got lost along the way. As far as the people here in N.Ireland are concerned they are the nicest, friendliest people in the world and I draw my friends from both sides of the divide. The extremes of both groupings however are the worst type of so called patriots you could find as both are prepared to kill for their cause and that I can and will never subscribe to.

@Marionville I not allowed 2 emoji so here is the ((((((hug))))))) that you would have also got for your remark if I had been allowed!

@FrayedBear I’m sending a hug back through the ether!

When Scotland was having their referendum for Independence a few years ago, my Protestant friends here in N.Ireland couldn’t understand why I supported the SNP and if I had been able to vote would have voted for independence. To them Nationalism is an anathema and they equate it with Republicanism and the violence of the IRA. I am sorry Scotland didn’t take the best chance she will probably ever have to rule herself again. We pioneered the world over the centuries and gave the rest of the world countless inventions and discoveries, were masters of economics and industry in every corner of the globe and yet didn’t have the confidence to take the reigns back from Westminster. If we had and could have modelled ourselves on Norway as the SNP have always wanted, we could be a proud , independent and wealthy country again.

@Marionville I believe that the North Sea oil was opportunity lost.

@FrayedBear Yes, if we’d had control of the oil revenues we could have had a wealth fund to rival Norway’s today.....instead it has been squandered by successive Westminster governments.

Love this version thanks for sharing xx

We marched into school to this tune in Primary School.....I don’t know about today, but every child of my generation knew every word of this song!

My Grandmother was proud that her maiden name was Wallace.

@FrayedBear One of my best friends has that surname too.

@FrayedBear, why? What does that pride mean? What purpose does it serve?

@SimonCyrene If you were Scottish you would feel you were part of our History with that name. William Wallace was martyred for his belief that Scotland should be free of the English yoke. The song Scots Wha’ Hae is about that struggle for freedom. Pride is in being associated with or descended from him.

@SimonCyrene Agreed. It not a word that I often use preferring when talking about myself to say "I'm not ashamed".

@SimonCyrene, @Marionville Pride comes before a fall?

@FrayedBear It is not necessarily a bad thing to take pride in something......each nation has its heroes and villains. As long as pride in one’s heritage doesn’t step over into jingoism and triumphalism it is to be applauded.
