They are not using modern major and minor scales. Ancient modes. But which ones? Iā€™d love to peck around at the piano with these harmonies. Anybody here play this Romanian/Bulgarian style of traditional music?

This just struck me as familiar. When I was in Catholic grade school, Pennsylvania USA coal region. I played the pipe organ in church when I was around 10 to 14 years old. It was a Polish parish. I remember some of the simple hymns I played and the modalities and melodies sounded like this. I remember some of the older members of the choir had this distinct style of improvising harmonies with each other over and around the melody line. I went on to learn some Bach preludes and fuges and this swept me away to Baroque music and I rejected this sound as unsophisticated and was becoming a music snob. I look back on this now, and especially hearing this, as beautiful and ethereal. Is this genre typical to the Baltic Region? My hometown had Polish, Slavic, Italian and Irish parishes, all centered in their respective ethnic communities.
