When it comes to standing up to America, neither the LIbNats nor the ALP have a very good record, post Whitlam. Albanese should; Assange case is a disgrace, but don't count on it, despite what he might have said before. Very quickly, I would imagine, Albanese will get the 'don't forget you, Australia,

What the Australian PM should do is call in US and UK ambassadors and give an ultimatum; Return Julian to these shores ASAP or we need to reconsider why we should honour a defense pact agreement with two countries that treat our citizens in this way.
Wave the AUKUS agreement in front of them and casually enquire of the US ambassador; "How long would it take you to demobilise from Darwin?"
Give them 72 Hours to have Assange back here and if not, show them we are not bluffing.
We need a referendum: "Should Australia allow foreign military's to establish permanent bases on our soil?"
If NO, then kick them out
If YES, then invite others to come as well, not just the Yanks.

I suggested an alternative to Keating & Howard something like 30 years ago. As usual I was laughed at. If my plan had been followed Australia would now have a combination of the qualities of Switzerland & Florida but no one would want to invade whilst retaining the unique Australian worthy characteristics of mateship, progressive innovation & good humoured practicality.
Actually as the Australian military has already made parts of Australia untenable perhaps your idea should be extended to running military holiday camps allowing say Chinese to play against Americans, Swedes against Russians each day then at days end they can all feast together in the mess halls.
