This is what my sand molds will look like. The pour cup(gate) is on the left and the air vents are the red objects to the right. All of the gates, vents, and sculpture are in wax that will melt out in a kiln. I'll tip the mold upside-down to let the wax run out. Then melt the iron and pour it in. so clever. I've done two castings, once aluminum, once iron. i like your mold better than what I did. I was invited to participate in an iron pour with some sculpture friends in school. i packed sand stuff around the "rubber duckie". then the mold is split and the rubber ducky is removed. the vents were added in the packing step. frought with opportunities to mess it all up. So, does the kiln firing harden the mold or is that just to remove the wax?

I'll use sodium silicate as the binder. It won't really harden since it'll be 'burned out' at under 400 degrees F. I've done the splitting thing and it's ok. This just eliminated an extra step.
