You can do it! Look at you tube videos. Try Jane Font or the Art Sherpa.

I see pansies in the lower two images. I kinda have to agree with your friend re: the top one. That looks to.me like a cross between a pansy and a portobello. (,Sorry! Also, keep in.mind that I fall, I think, into the realist school and often cannot appreciate more sophisticated work.)
