Howdy all šŸ™‚. Anyone doing any really big handcrafting out there, like house size stuff? Curious if Iā€™m out here by myself.
Cheers!

I'm envious!

@HoaryMarmot Yes, it is. I thought about that as I wrote that comment. Maybe, I'm not so envious as I am admiring of your digs.

I've aspired to such amazing things but age has robbed me of a lot of the ability I used to have to handle big jobs myself. I LOVE the staircase, I often wished to put something like it up to my attic, which I wanted to finish into a "library" but don't see that happening. I still do a lot of my own interior work, I get a lot of pleasure out of doing it myself, although I recently decided to hire someone to switch out the tub for a shower, mostly because I don't want to undertake that job now. I will put the floor down once the shower is in and replace/build a new vanity. Your work is beautiful and really impresses me.

This was my latest project, constructing a linen closet in the bathroom. It is built with unfinished cabinets.

@HoaryMarmot I've always enjoyed working with my hands but grew up in a generation when women didn't do carpentry, repair work... the list goes on. My grandparents raised me for my early years, my grandad was a mechanic, in the days when they fixed more than cars. He actually built a car, there is a picture of my uncle driving it in a local historical publication. After he "retired" he became a local "handyman" , fixing pretty much anything. I remember my grandma complaining about how he would go out and fix thing for anyone that called but she couldn't get him to fix a darn thing around the house. (I've heard this is a common problem) I think that inspired me to want to learn to do everything, so I wouldn't have to count on anyone if I needed something done.
As it turned out, I didn't learn "everything" but I know how to do more things than a lot of people I know, including my ex, who, if it wasn't car related, wasn't interested in learning about it. That is where I learned to change brake pads and adjust them and some other stuff, however. With age, I've become more selective about what I do, I've given up pretty much anything car related and if it involves wrestling "parts" over 50 lbs, I'm looking for a contractor.
These days I look back at some of the projects I did and have trouble figuring out how I did it. I put in a pull down folding attic ladder by myself 20+ years ago. Not long ago I found myself wondering how the hell I got that thing up there. Despite toning down my projects some, I still have a list of wanna-dos that are likely to last longer than I do. šŸ™‚

@DotLewis I wanted to learn carpentry from my stepfather and step-grandfather, but was told I couldn't learn because I'm a girl. I recently took a women's home repair class through Neighborworks. I'm definitely not up to your or HoaryMarmot's level, but I'm hoping to be able to take care of most things when I get my own place. šŸ™‚

Well, that method will not work for me. I am going to engage the Amish crew of builders around here. Hopefully, they will know what to do. Is this something you built for yourself, or for someone else?

@HoaryMarmot Thanks!

@HoaryMarmot Can I ask you other questions about my barn, as soon as Sam the Amish carpenter is under way?

Beautiful! I have done plenty of house renovations and our commune owned a Cornmill in Altham that had a listed stone slab roof and massive King and Queen post but only the lightest people could walk across the floor with out falling through to 6000 square feet of dereliction

Absolutely beautiful.

Very impressive. Where do you find these very tall beams? I am asking because I will have to find one or two for my two storey barn that wants to collapse. Doers one go to the woods and cut something down?
