Yesterday Karen and I took our women's hiking group on a fast, 6.5 mile loop above Squilchuck State Park. Tall Ponderosa pines provide dappled shade.

Karen and I love this shady hike in the woods year-round. In the summer, it is much cooler than Wenatchee, WA. Karen and I snowshoe the mountain bike trails in the winter.

Mountain Ladyslippers were blooming in the shade. We found a rare, Rocky Mountain Lily. The women were impressed. We had fun.

After a heavy snowstorm the night before. Karen and I went snowshoeing above Squilchuck State Park in December 2017. It dawned a clear, blue day.

Animal tracks in freshly-fallen snow show who lives there. Someone had decorated a small fir tree for Christmas.

We saw where a large owl had swooped down, dragging its tail feathers, and tussled with a mouse. The owl pushed off with two thrusts of its wings in the snow, again dragging its tail feathers, before lifting up and flying away.

It was magical. I will never forget it.

Posted by CallMeDaveI've never been a big wildflower person, but this is the season for it here in Appalachia. Other people can identify every variety. I'm not there yet.
