If you're in the north east, crampons and snowshoes are still a very good idea.
Just hiked in the southern Catskills Sunday, and while there was no snow at the parking lot level, there was over a foot at the summit.
Be safe, be prepared.

Considering there are trees with most of the branches on one side of the tree, there's regular high winds up there.

That is correct. That region gets some pretty stiff winds. Its almost enough to make you grateful for that fact that the peaks aren't exposed.
