Today we found plane wreckage on a 1943 crash on a nearby mountain.
Debris is scattered on a steel hillside with a vague trail.
The plane was a twin engine B-25. Supposedly they were given clearance to fly at 3000 ft, and hit the 4000 ft mountain at night.

where is this? I would like to add it to places to hike to

It is on the Southeast side of sharp top, possibly the most-hiked mountain in Virginia. It is in Bedford county. The wreakage is on a poorly defined, unmarked side trail.

Ooh - that hurts even all these years later....

We used to find old cars sometimes in the middle of woods where I am - but that's because there were houses out there at one time - and farms - all the land in CT and MA being farmed at one time and only now going back to being forested in the last 100 years or so.
(So many stone walls to climb over).

Glad we never found planes - would have made me wonder about the nearby airports.

Hulk smash, hamming it up. This was a training flight in the early fifties lost in bad weather. Was up there about three years ago.

That is really cool! A little sad but cool.

Posted by CallMeDaveI've never been a big wildflower person, but this is the season for it here in Appalachia. Other people can identify every variety. I'm not there yet.
