I'm kind of surprised so many atheists are leftists, but I guess it's the natural need people say God fills to believe in something beyond our mundane existence. I think fantasy novels/games are a better way to fill that than God or the government, but I guess not everyone realizes what they're doing.

Side note, what do you all think of anarchocapitalism? To me it seems like the logical end goal of libertarians, though I understand if it seems a bit too utopian. I figure there are parts of the government that it's hard to imagine replacing, but one step at a time should let us cut off bad parts of the government (hopefully faster than they are generated; it is rather like a hydra). It'll be tough without broader support though.

Humorous addendum: I found this group as a suggestion in this post:

I mostly identify as a non-conformist, but could also loosely identify with a few other descriptive names, one of them being an anarcho capitalist. People need to remember all things in moderation, and I find both the left and right political sides to be too pushy and demanding. Free markets when operated like they should produce free citizens who can live fully independent lives free of government regulation. I disdain the NT in the holy babble in particular because alot of what that long haired preacher guy's teachings were anti wealth and property, which there is nothing wrong with either.

I must be one (Anacrcho Capitalist). I had to look it up. LOL! I agree with the fundamental tenets, but I HATE that term. It negatively connotes it to be an out-of-control system when it would, in fact, be a self-regulating system based on a simple set of laws. I much prefer the term "Laissez Faire" capitalism, which is essentially the same thing.

Alternatively, you can be a voluntary capitalist (vocap); see The Liberty Network on YouTube

@NotConvinced Well voluntarism yes, but I was talking about Mr. Dapperton's idea of creating a subgroup of ancaps known as vocaps since most people hear anarchy and think violent chaos, also with the idea of trying to use the government against itself by voting for the more capitalist candidate rather than boycotting the voting booth.

I made this post in response: [agnostic.com]

Oh, and it was from this: Which way do you lean politically and why?

I think Bitcoin is a step in the direction of anarchocapitalism. I'm not sure that the public will ultimately buy into it, though. (Pardon the pun.) I think the main point of libertarianism is to not initiate the use of force, but to have those components of government available and ready to retard and punish the unwanted use of force initiated by others.

I will be running for congress this fall. I will not hedge from my pure libertarian ideology, but realize and advocate that the transition from where we are today to that libertarian ideal in the future should be slow and steady. The objective is to have a government that maximizes the long-term happiness of society, and it is not to have a libertarian government -- Libertarian government is the means, not the ends.

People have become dependent on today's government. They need to be weaned slowly and carefully and fairly; otherwise, great unhappiness will be created, defeating the objective.

I agree completely, except I think we might be able to replace the parts of the government that enforce justice with free alternatives too, e.g. how some neighborhoods are already getting private security to cope with the slow response times of police. One step at a time though.

True. I think another quick remedy is to reduce our armies so that they are defensive, and not have them so as to nation-build, nurture our economic interests, protect capital investments abroad, or even protect citizens who travel or work abroad. Reduce our embassies/consulates to one per country, and then eliminate them altogether (obsolete).

@GlyndonD That's definitely a step in the right direction.

Posted by SpikeTalonNeither one of the extremes, and yet the best of both worlds...

Posted by SpikeTalonSubstitute the word liberals for progressives, and that would describe me as well. As for the conservative part, the socially/theocratic (aka, bible thumpers, mostly) ones in particular.
