It can be the difference between a warning and a $400 ticket (or worse, if you actively resist arrest). Psychologically speaking, police officers are people too, and most joined in the interest of trying to make people safer, so demonstrating that you are no threat to society makes them like you more and encourages leniency.

<sigh> Libertarians believe in the right of people to move freely and conduct their business without government interference. In other words, we can figuratively cross any damn road we so please and should not have our agenda or reasons questioned. It's no one's business but our own. Therefore, if you aren't detaining me, get out of my way. If you are detaining me....on what charge? and I want my lawyer.
