Do you feel depressed and bereft after you submit a finished piece? Yesterday, I submitted two short articles to our union magazine. Now, this morning, I'm wandering around like a lost, grumpy cat. When I was still performing and suffered like this after a show, I called it the Cinderella syndrome, i.e. from belle of the ball to unwanted drudge. Bleah.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.i have not experienced grief after submission, no. i usually feel a sense of relief, like i've finished something. maybe not the best thing, but some thing. And then twenty minutes later, i'm sitting rocking myself in a fetal position second-guessing every word i'd chosen.
if this is a regular feeling for you, you may want to have your own grief reception (like after a funeral) - maybe a ritual of going to a diner and having some whitefish salad and a cup of coffee?

In the performing, yes. Step off the stage and into the 'real' world -- a real roller coaster. Did that for a few years. The writing is different. High while doing it, oh yes. Gets to be a bit of drudge at the middle of the second rewrite, but a feeling of elation comes in when it goes out the door. This is followed almost immediately with wanting to get it back before the publisher sees it so I can rewrite some pesky sections that kept me from sleeping after it went out. I've never published anything I didn't want to rewrite. So it's high, morphing into drudgery followed by joy, then the rewrite angst settles in for the long haul. No more than a week later, the process rewinds for the repeat.
