I'm currently coordinating an anthology collection of sci-fi/fantasy by my writers group, to be published online probably through Booklocker.com. Two questions: 1) If there aren't enough short stories to fill up the planned 150 pages for the book, do you think it's acceptable to include excerpts from novellas or novels also? 2) Do you think sci-fi/fantasy is the genre limit for one volume, or do you think broader "supernatural" (mystery) and dystopian (a la H. G. Wells) might be included too without diluting the focus too much?

How short are you and, more importantly, why? What's the theme? What are the limits for word count? Are you limited to only writers from your group?

As with the previous reply, I'm hoping for something to unify our efforts, though there's no one theme -- far from it. Word count should be within about 1,000 words to 5,000 -- unless we allow extracts as tasters for future volumes as part of a promotional plan. (I'm in touch with Boost-a-Book, which is associated with Boolocker.com). Yes, I'm restricted to the writers I currently know and am in touch with -- which means my writers group of about 20 people. Though sci-fi/fantasy is the most popular field to write for them it means practically that I will end up with only about 6-7 writers who are up to standard (at most). If we go the paid-promotion route it is intended that there will be up to 3 volumes (x 150pp) in the series so the first anthology will be made up largely of short stories we've already done. These range from genuine sci-fi mystery based on science, to world-building fantasy adventures (a la Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings), to apocalyptic. Otherwise, if we can't focus narrowly enough it could end up to be a broader "introduction to NZ writers" kind of thing. The big (small) meeting of minds tomorrow will determine our direction, so wish me luck, and competence.
@Garbonza -- Good luck, and it sounds like you're going to need it. First volume should be no problem, but I see what your dilemma is with the others.
