Zephyr’s Breath

And like the Danes, I drank from the shade
Its berry sweet
And the tightness in my belly did fade
I watched in defeat
A fallen column’s flute my bed
The fires set in our homes
Tipped in red
No longer do my eyes see
A coin beneath my tongue
I listened to the marauder’s raid
The jubilant sounds they made
Never will I again sow seed
Zephyr’s breath shall not again find me
A gleam of light on shore’s edge
The sky as night
Sand beneath me the color of soot
Close set torches seared the night
Ebony wood creaked
The shore pulled away
Upon a deck I swayed
Another coin in the ferryman’s reeking palm
Dead calm we sailed
Gates in fog unveiled
Beasts a plenty there reside
Hideous wings lash to their sides
And claws at the ready to disembowel
The ferryman cast off with a howl
Stranded, I have become
Judges three surged
Judges three converged
Judges three watched unurged
Looked not at me, but within
Freighted, I am numb
Each watched my life in the Sun
Two judges dissolved in the air
And left only one there
He pointed to the gate
Unknown was my fate
He urged me forward
Shaken was my gait
Darkness awaits
A flash of light and beneath a wall I’m led
Beyond this palisade a meadow
A place where wild grasses grow
The touch of a fingertip on the green
A world unto itself unseen
Others come to my side
“Welcome,” was bidden
And in Zephyr’s breath I abide
