I'm currently working on a fiction piece about a slow societal collapse alongside a biosphere collapse. Looking for resources, particularly how an urbanized person would survive if thrust back into a tribal hunter-gatherer lifestyle in a polluted world.
Esp. considering the ongoing collapse of insect populations and the resulting ecological collapses on land, and the destruction of fish stock due to overfishing and plastic induced gastric shock, what will be left in a world without commercial access to combustible fuels and processed food?

There are so many ways you could go with this. They could be scavenging bugs and as you pointed out hallucinating or getting sick from eating the wrong plants. Learning to hunt, preying on each other or enslaving others to grow food for them etc etc

There are a lot of post apocalyptic novels that could help you out there (sorry I can't think of titles off the top of my head), and depending on the characters you could look at some of the survival manuals that are currently on the market.

MIke Davis' "Dead Cities" is a good non-fiction that might show exactly how urban areas would collapse. I suspect any stuff on preppers would be useful, as would something like WIlfred Thesinger's work on the Bedouins and other nomadic peoples in the Sahara. Mark Kurlansky's "Cod" might also prove useful about overfishing.

I remember reading a distopic si-fi story called " Go east young man. " Where the US is gradually disintegrating and the people sociologically most able to cope gain the upper hand. The hereditary senator for Ohio is trying to negotiate a new treaty with the head of the Navajo nation and losing.

The majority would die, probably from conflict with others scrabbling to get and hoard what they can.

@Greymattersuit Man is an omnivore, so the ones that can throw off their urban squeamishness will learn to appreciate lots of new tastes. I leave them to your imagination.
I personally love lightly sauteed locusts and raw termites.
Then there are vegetables that are nourishing, but have hallucinatory side-effects (Did you know that the bitter taste of Rhubarb is due to the strychnine it contains. Bitter almonds have traces of cyanide.)

@Greymattersuit I just remembered one of the series I was thinking of. It's called the protector's war but I can't remember the author

@Masterdegenerate Stirling?

@Petter I think so, now that you mention it

@Masterdegenerate The majority of urban survivors would be those with the common sense to get out into the countryside - and find unpolluted water. Thirst would be a major killer as taps ran dry and supermarket shelves emptied of bottled water. Man can survive far longer without food than without water!

@Greymattersuit Hard to say. I think people in the country would continue to grow their own food and kill city people trying to take it away from them.
