One of the great potential benefits of groups like this is that we can tip one another off to the existence of authors that we would not otherwise have heard of. I'd like to nominate "The Last Blue Sea" by the Australian novelist David Forrest. It's about the Second World War in New Guinea. I first read it when I was 12 and I don't know of a better novel of that war. My father fought in New Guinea so it has a particular poignancy for me.
