So I come across this term “free thinker”, I think to myself, I’m free, and I’m a thinker (though many would argue otherwise😉), I must be a freethinker. Sounds so lofty and ethereal.

Then I do a LITTLE research... it seems to be a term used to justify stepping away from the confines of organized religion. There certainly is historic use of the term, but its use appears to have waned over the last 100 years.
So my question is: is this still a thing, or are there more contemporary terms that are a better fit?

I call myself a heathen or pagan. Either one works for me.

Words derive their meanings from the way they are used. The term "free thinker" is too nebulous for me - I don't use it.

Free thinker to me is someone unchained to ANY dogma; not only religious but political, economic, social. Any system of set, undeniable value.

Yes, among the group here it is still a thing. I like the term better than Atheist or Agnostic because those seem to have negative connotations related to them (as well as prejudices). Freethinker sounds wise, thoughtful and intellectual.
