imagine that some space aliens of superior intelligence came to Earth. They capture humans to be used as pets or zoo animals. But they would give humans nice shelter, food and quality medical care. Would it be a fair deal for humans? If not, why not?
Me:
I'd be alright with that arrangement but I don't like what that seems to make my attitude toward slavery. Owning a slave wasn't quite like keeping a pet. In fact, the idea of keeping a pet may have dulled the instinct away from how that differed from a slave. But would I submit to the kind daily routine set by someone else for life's basic needs to be met? Um, yes.
Free and wild is always better, even if life it shorter and harder, it is better than caged or enslaved.
Is a house pet caged? I would debate that.
@rainmanjr Depends on the pet and the owner.
Time to get a new teacher I think if that is a serious question.
My guess is that you didn’t read it. He didn’t defend slavery or use an outlandish comparison.
@Moravian I reread it to see if I missed something insensitive. I don't think that I did. He's not making a correlation but an observation on a popular justification but it misses. I'd be okay with being a kept zoo animal or pet but don't equate those situations with slavery. Aside from that the article is worth it for the domestication of the animals, the subordination of women, the subjugation of “backward” peoples through colonization, the conquest of nature through science and the degradation of the environment alone.
