I am new to this group. Yay! On this Easter weekend, what do you think of the allegorical aspects of the gospels. Once you dig through the allegory and literary constructs, there really isn't much left. Who was this Jesus? Was he an apocalyptic preacher, a composite of other messianic figures, or did he even exist.

I was told first there was Krishna, then Manos, then Jesus. Apparently the West also wanted "someone".

The way I understand it there were apocalyptic preachers by the cartloads at the time. The time was right for a Messianic incursion due to the Roman occupation so, as with all soteriological ideologies, freedom was just around the corner!

I am sure we can’t know if this individual existed or is a composite character. The gospels are great literature, even in translation, which is probably how they made it into the canon. We know there were a lot of texts of a similar nature knocking around at the time. They could be the favourite stories, cobbled together for the authors’ political ends, like an anthology of Saviour’s Stories.

Tacitus and Josephus are usually trotted out to support historical veracity of a central character by if you read the texts pertaining to the circumstances they are tenuous at best.

We are unlikely ever to ever find proof of one person 2,000 years away so the myth can continue to proceed until it’s no longer needed.
