I always liked wild gardens with plenty of diversity and flowers, including insect plants and if insects eat some I am happy to let them in a mixed garden it is never too bad ad something always replaces the. Lawns are not only low on diversity but also high on labour and have a huge carbon and resource consumption footprints. Yet I believe that lawns as front gardens are enforced by bylaws in some places, how mad is that ?

Hell, when we bought our house it had these ugly overgrown disease ridden bushes in the front flower beds so we pulled them all out and I planted all manner of flowers and flowering bushes. It was so pretty, the neighbors would stop and thank me for such a lovely sight to see when they pulled into the neighborhood. I still got a letter and a fine from the HOA! They said I didn't ask them if it was OK before I did it. ?

@Redheadedgammy I hate HOA's
@Fernapple my planting is similar, I just plant - all over, random. I do have grass but it is mostly pasture land for the horses

@Redheadedgammy Until I joined this site I always thought that the US was at least in part, "the land of the free."

@Fernapple Yeah, free to follow the rules of whoever's in power/charge...Lol

@Redheadedgammy It always seemed strange to me that you have a thing called the separation of church and state, which seems to stop the state interefering with the churches, ( even asking for taxes) but the churches feel free to attempt dictating to the state.

@Fernapple The religious whacks have pretty much taken over the repub party and our Supreme court. Hopefully the people will be able to push back and get us back on the track our founding fathers wanted for our Country.

@Redheadedgammy Bees also love Creeping Charlie, which was all over in my lawn. My neighbors hated that I didn't control the Charlie as it would encroach on their precious lawns. I actually liked it as a ground cover, despite it's invasiveness. I wound up severely controlling it in the the front yard. At the same time I was gradually reducing my lawn area, replacing it with shrubs and flowers.

@itsmedammit Ah, Glechoma, we call it ground ivy here I had to look creeping charlie up, it is lovely to learn that it has other vernacular names, great name.

ALWAYS in mind. Funny, I had a coffee date yesterday, and just one point of conflict was in discussing gardens. I mentioned that I was shopping for more lavender and he scoffed, due to the number of bees that would be attracted. Bye-bye.

Good call on that one!?

Note to self - ways to find out if a date is truly compatible, discuss bee attracting plants.... ?

I planted amaranth and zennias in our school's Community Garden last year and I'll do more this year! We had loads of bees. I'm feeding the volleyball coaches bees. He has a domestic hive in his backyard two houses away.

That is neat!

It is said that single gardens can make little difference to honey crops, but because they offer diversity they are often vital to keeping the bees for starving in difficult times between major crops.

That is what I'm doing with all my flower beds. My wisteria is blooming now and there are bees all over it. I love to hear their busy little wings buzzing around.?

I don't have wisteria (yet) but they are all over my peach blossoms, and I agree, love the buzzing/humming sound

@Heidi68 I don't know why, but the sound their wings make has always made me smile. I'm a weirdo I guess. LOL

@Redheadedgammy well, at least know you aren't alone.... the sound makes me smile - I always think of it as a happy sound.

Be sure to put your buzz on .

I always plant a little something for the buzzy bees.

glennlab Level 10 Mar 17, 2019

Right now they are loving my peach blossoms

@Heidi68 same with my nectarine, when we have weird weather that destroys the blooms, I will leave a sugar water solution with a saucer of flour nearby. I put marbles in the water so they can land on them.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
