When I lived in France and worked on a cargo ship I used these toilets several times. I have never seen a communal toilet like these but it could be fun. Drop your pants make sure your clothes are out of the way and go. In some ways, I preferred them as there was no trying to sit on a dirty toilet seat.

Had encountered such facilities in Italy and Morocco in the 90's. Strange and weird, but when you gotta go, you gotta go
